Yikes, been awhile since I updated the blog. Very soon I promise I will retroactively update with some photos of tattoos I have done in the last month or so. I dont' think I have ever posted a picture of this, but here is a pic of a tattoo I did on our former receptionist at LFDY, Nick's, thigh. A black and great rose for his mom. This tattoo is huge! The photo is deceptive. Thanks Nick for illustrating that it is okay for men to get tattoos of flowers, and tattoos for their mothers.

My latest obsession; pictographs! Especially of the prehistoric Scandinavian variety. These are a reference illustration in a book I am using for a research paper I am writing for my archaeology class. The book is a very interesting read and worth checking out: Ambiguous Images: Gender and Rock Art by Kelley A. Hays-Gilpin. I didn't ask for permission to post the illustrations on my blog but I'm hoping the plug for the book with supersede the trouble I might get into for posting the pics.

This is a semi-healed picture posted after the actual tattoo was done. We completed the tattoo on November 28th. The tattoo is a hybrid American-Mexian eagle, (from the US and Mexican flags, eagles don't look different based on political borders nor do they even know what political borders are)...The tattoo is based on his heritage and love of punk rock in its resemblance to the Ramones logo eagle as well. I added yet more background smilies to Ian's arm today. This marks our third smile making endeavor together. The first recorded here. Stranger yet than a body filled with smilies is that last night I was surfing blogs in-between drawing and I found a picture of Ian's arm on another person's blog, completely randomly who stated that he didn't do the tattoos on Ian's arm, but he wished he did. How strange!

Marc's Pin-up

I am really excited about this pin-up that I tattooed on Marc today. The woman is intended to look like his wife, Kelly, (I modeled her face after a picture of her which I won't post to respect her privacy, her body is a completely custom creation based on classic pin-up girl poses and art). But Marc and Kelly both seemed to be really happy with the finished product, and me too! It reminded me a bit of Desmond's tattoo while I was doing it, funny how things come in waves, both pin-up girls resembling their wives without being portraits on their right shoulder to boot!

I then tattooed a "regular" client Brian who added onto his patchwork arm with the addition of an eagle in black-and-grey, (below) and a cross, (not pictured).

Natalie's Key

I tattooed this key and swirlies on Natalie today. The word, (love), was existing on her arm and the key was intended to work around the existing tattoo and incorporate the two together. Natalie is an aspiring make-up artist and a sweet gal to work on, I wish her all the best in her future endeavors. I posted the two pictures of her tattoo to better illustrate the whole piece, which is slightly obscured by the light in both photos, but together make a clear image.

Jam-Packing Saturdays!

I started the day with a 5k with my running friends Rachel and Katie, (team Flying Piranha-three members strong and growing), the race benefited disabled veterans, apropos for Veteran's Day. It was a small race but we were nonetheless happy to participate. Running stride-in-stride with veterans was additionally inspirational. Check out KSTP's video covering the race here, (scroll down the page to find the video and click it to play). Despite being anti-war, I am still grateful to those who have volunteered to serve in the service and been tragically injured and victimized or killed in the process. The only buzzkill of the race happened when we crossed the finish line, (or so we thought), I started to drink some water and begin my cool-down walk and realized everyone kept running! We were only halfway through the course and needed to complete another loop! I almost gave up there, having just sprinted to the deceptive finish line, up a hill to boot. Katie and I trudged on though to finish in a reasonable amount of time. I definitely need to start training for the next race, (Thanksgiving Day), so that I can improve my time.

Part two of the day consisted of tattooing this lovely gal on Desmond who traveled all the way from Saskatchewan, Canada to get tattooed! Desmond was joined by his adorable wife Sam who kept us company during the all-day session. For those of you who weren't educated in Canadian geography, (see: every American), I've posted this map below so you can better understand where Canada and the respective provinces are.

Also, I can't help myself. Sorry, Desmond and Sam, but I'm here to entertain AND inform. Since viewing the Office episode where Dwight sings the Canada song whenever I question the provinces of Canada, this particular song resonates through my brain. View the song and learn here. Tattooed this Dia Los Muertos lady on Donna today, completed in one four hour session.

I then added onto Sue's lady slipper tattoo which you can view pre-background here. The addition of background is supposed to resemble the northern lights with some orbs, there are also some numbers near her ankle and an acorn! Interestingly enough, after our consultation for the add-on to her tattoo there was an exceptional display of northern lights seen across the northern hemisphere, coincidence? We agreed it's not! Three consultation and a touch-up too, whew! Productive day!

Mummy Wieners!

Yum, one of my favorite Halloween dinners, mummy wieners! I made a delicious meal for Halloween of these tofu pups wrapped in dough and bake for a few minutes, accompanied with hot cider with cinnamon sticks and orange slices, some veggies and lots of treats. I got to enjoy the (best) holiday with a delicious breakfast at the Bad Waitress, a little tattoo courtesy David at the shop, a little time with my brothers and an evening of scary movies and treat dispensing for the trick-or-treaters. Not bad for a surprise day-off and a monday!

Pumpkin Carving Dogs

I painstakingly attempted to grow pumpkins all spring and summer long. Unfortunately, one plant was trampled by a friends dog whilst in infancy, one blossomed with only male flowers and one plant sprouted one lonely female flower which I babied until a little pumpkin grew. My little pumpkin grew and grew and then stopped growing. In denial, I continued to water and care for my baby pumpkin, waiting patiently for it to turn orange and get larger. Fast forward two months and my little green pumpkin looked exactly as it did months ago. I accepted finally that a borer had gotten to my pumpkin and it had been hanging lifelessly to it's dead umbilicus for months, but I didn't cut the tie just yet. My plan was to remove it from the cord on Halloween and carve my little baby up. Two nights before Halloween I let out my puppies to do their business in the yard, run around, do their "doggie thing." Capone was in an exceptional mood, galloping across the yard, hopping and being generally ridiculous. Capone paused for a moment in front of the sad, green, baby pumpkin and in a frenzy attacked it!!! In between hysterical laughter I ran to rescue the sad pumpkin from his clutches, which he gave up willingly. When I retrieved the sad, green, stunted baby, to my surprise I saw I no longer needed to carve the pumpkin on Halloween, for Capone had done it for me. His frenzy of teeth and claws had carved an easily identifiable face on the sad pumpkin. My work was done, the sad pumpkin got what it deserved and my dog is a confirmed prodigy. Happy Halloween!

Kelly's Mushrooom

I tattooed this little mushroom on Kelly's ankle this evening. Additionally, some text around the mushroom, a quote from the Lewis Carroll's, Through the Looking Glass, (Alice and Wonderland story). I chose to post this close-up of the mushroom as it showcases the detail of the tattoo.

To quote How it Works.com, on the Fly Agaric; "This mushroom is deadly only if eaten in large quantities. It grows as much as one foot (30 cm) tall in woods and along roadsides. The top of the cap is straw yellow to reddish orange, spotted with white or pale-yellow warts. The gills are white or pale yellow. One of its poisons, muscarine, paralyzes the nerves controlling heart action."

And that had nothing to do with why Kelly got this tattoo, she just likes mushrooms, and I have to agree, the red, spotted Fly Agaric is the cutest, at least in illustrated form.

I started the day with a handful of consultations. Then, keeping in the Halloweenie theme that has been persisting in my tattoos I tattooed a memorial on Shane's foot for his mother. No, she is not a zombie but was a costume designer and make-up artist and worked on the film Dawn of the Dead.

Then to change pace I did a non-macabe tribute tattoo for Sarah's daughter, Eleanor, by tattooing "Edelweiss" on the inside of her forearm, with the addition of some rosemaling on either side.

Big Gay Race

My friend Rachel, (terrarium inspiration gal and floral arm tattoo if you follow my blog), persuaded me to run a race with her. Today we ran the Big Gay Race in support of marriage rights for all Minnesotans. Rachel and I ran on the Planned Parenthood team.

The Planned Parenthood Team pre race, bursting with excitement.

It was Rachel's first race and the environment couldn't have been better for a first race; fun, festive, participants in costumes, free food and great music! I am proud to say that with little training I was still able to run the whole course and complete the race in just over 25 minutes, not great, but no bad for little training. I think I am reinspired to run again..thanks Rachel!

I finished Morgan's arm today, a creation from his own artwork, tattooed entirely in brown. I lovingly referred to tattooing on Morgan all day as "going to brown town." Alas, we completed the last part of his arm and he is off on his journey to Hawaii, I wish him all the best, and for his benefit, that he doesn't move back to the land of ice and snow.

The later portion of my day included tattooing the above text on Brad's side. Brad was beat up and abused from softball playoffs in North Carolina earlier in his week, so the rib tattoo was a breeze in comparison.

Today I had the day off work to attend clients and friends, Rick and Angie's, wedding. The couple were wed at Silverwood Park, a beautiful park in St. Anthony that I am delighted to now be familiar with. The wedding went off without a hitch, on a beautiful afternoon. I had volunteered to help with anything for the extravaganza, as Rick had helped me with my own wedding three years ago. Rick and Angie assigned me to bartend with another friend George who, coincidentally, bartended my wedding. George and I are both non-drinkers so this was clearly a natural choice for Rick and Angie, (no chance of us getting wasted on the job!). We had a great time and make an excellent wedding bartending team. If you need a bartender for your next event, George and I are offering our services now that we have experience.

Also, I painted a little picture for Rick and Angie's "guestbook," their cartoon likeness that was illustrated in a tattoo I did recently on Rick's chest, which you can view here. The "guestbook" features the couple holding "balloons" which are actually thumbprints of the friends and family. I will go back into the painting later and add the strings to the balloons. In keeping with the theme, Rick and Angie released balloons during their ceremony.

Sea Turtle

Ashley, a student and employee of the MOA's own Underwater World tattooed an ode to her favorite rehabilitated sea turtle, Seemore, on her foot. The white lump on the turtle is a characteristic of Seemore, (as this is tattooed in her likeness), the lump is actually a weight which is used to help her dive. Seemore was injured, (likely from a boat propeller), and her shell cracked. The trapped air in her now repaired shell prevents her from diving, so the weights were added to counterbalance the trapped air. Beside the turtle tat, I started a giant tattoo on Jackie's side/half back and did some writing on Amanda's back.

Here is a sneak peak of Joe's "time flies/swims" half sleeve. The piece is inspired by Portisehead's "The Rip" music video (click the link to watch). Joe wanted the fish clock to resemble the exact fish from that video, some I added my own interpretation to, all black and grey. I hope to finish this very soon!

And then two sets of black bands on Adam's finger. I only post this as an opportunity to explain a little bit about my philosophy on finger tattoos. 1. Generally speaking, I don't do finger tattoos. I will after much discussion and gnashing of teeth if; A) The person thoroughly understands the permanence of such and that they will likely not get a job in the professional sector with such a tattoo and B) If the person is heavily tattooed AND in a permanent job that allows such, (note: Adam is a self employed comic book artist, a good one I might add, I'll post a link to his portfolio when I get it from him), and lastly C) I am not held accountable for the crummy healing nature/touch-ups that will inevitably ensue from such tattooing. That said, Adan's tattoos went well and I wish him all the best with his burgeoning comic book arts career!

Fernando's Cover-Up

This little tattoo, (excluding eight ball and swirlies on wrist), was completed on a lovely Sunday afternoon on Fernando. The tattoo was the result of winning a gift certificate from a benefit to which I donated. The benefit was coordinated to raise suicide awareness and prevention. A cause near and dear to my heart. Erika was the artist who tattooed the wrist tattoo on Fernando. The tattoo we did today was a cover-up, I will try and dig up a picture of the former tattoo and add healed pics when this has settled down.

The other day a prospective client reminded me that I haven't posted on my blog in some time...I am well aware! The end of the spring semester brought new stressors, tragedy and more challenges than I have ever faced in my life. I have tried to approach this spring and summer with limited stressors; drawing for clients, tattooing, pets, family and friends are my priority. I feel as thought the people in my life appreciate this. But now that I am being hounded about my blog and school will be resuming again in a month or so I suppose I should at least catch up before resuming insanity-schedule again. Hence; the plan. I will be posting to fill in the blanks from when I last left off to present. I will also be posting the current updates and happenings. So there you have it folks, priorities first, blog second, but I'm back...enjoy!
